The Chinese Whispers process was used to generate drawings as stimuli for a series of experiments on object recognition with cognitive psychologist Dr Ben Dyson and funded by British Academy.
Rachel Cohen made a collection of drawings of objects and animals that were copied by participants in sequences of 20. These drawings were then shown to different participants in experiments designed to measure at what point the content of the drawing was recognisable. Objects and animals viewed from more familiar ‘canonical’ viewpoints were more quickly identified.
